    Sugar Cane Juice
Have you had a glass of fresh sugar cane juice before?
Yum Yum, it does taste very delicious.

Sugar cane (Ikshu Varga) juice is a natural diuretic

According to Charaka Samhita (Ayurvedic textbook) sugarcane is best for

    1. Burning sensation over the body
    2. burning urination
    3. Tiredness due to to excess sun exposure
    4. Pitta and Vata shamaka (reduces Vata and Pitta)

    Ch. Su. 27

It is cooling, unctuous and is nourishing but also Shleshmala (increases Kapha).

Sugarcane juice is best drank in the afternoon and it is recommended to avoid in the evening. When Ikshu Varga is chewed it has the following Ayurvedic properties. It is mentioned that the sugar cane pressed juice with machines can cause burning sensation (vidaha).

    Madhura (sweet)
    Guru (heavy)
    Snigdha (oily)
    Sheeta (cooling)
    Sara (laxative )
    Vrsya (aphrodisiac)

Paundraka type of sugarcane (near to while in colour) is considered superior to Vamshaka type.
A product of sugarcane is Guda (jaggery). Jaggery is used in many Ayurvedic formulations such as lehyams, asava and arishtas.

We have planted a sugar cane in our herb garden. We will keep you updated about the progress.
