According to the Madhava Nidanam, one of the classical texts of Ayurveda, menstruation is considered normal if it occurs regularly each month, for a period of 5 days, the fluid without mucus, a moderate quantity (not too much or too little) and flowing without a burning sensation or pain
The Madhava Nidanam also describes Menorrhagia - Called Asrgdar Nidanam in Sanskrit, the text describes four types of the condition - one of Vata, Pitta, Kapha or a combination of all three.
Depending on the doshic influence, an individual may experience the following:
Excessive menstrual flow
Debility and fainting
Giddiness
Excess thirst
Burning sensation
Pallor of the skin
Stupor and delirium
Discharge that is yellow, blue, black, crimson, bright red
Comes out in gushes
Smelly and heavy
With mucous
