According to Ayurveda the five elements (earth, water, fire, wind, ether) manifest in the functioning of the five senses.

    The five senses are:
    1. Hearing
    2. Tactile perception
    3. Vision
    4. Taste
    5. Smell

The Ether element is the medium through which sounds is transmitted and is thus related to the function of hearing. The sensory organ of hearing is the Ear.
The organ of action associated with the sense of hearing is the mouth and vocal cords which produce sounds.

A treatment to nourish the sense of hearing is called Karnapurana. This is an ancient ritual for re establishing harmony in the ear.
Karna is a Sanskrit word for ear and purana means to fill.
The practice suggest the filling of the ear canal with warm oil or ghee. This is done after a head massage. The oil is held in the ear for about 15-20 minutes. This procedure is then repeated on the other ear. After the procedure a steam is given to the upper part of the body.

Karnapurana will pacify Vata dosha and is very beneficial in hearing loss, earwax, vertigo, tinnitus, prevents infections, promotes sleep, jaw pain, depression, body balance disorder and many more benefits.

    Oils used for Karnapurana
    1. Black seed sesame oil
    2. Bilva thailam
    3. Garlic infused sesame oil
    4. Nirgundi oil
    5. Kshara thailam

This is a treatment which should not be performed without consulting your Ayurvedic physician and it should not be performed when there was a recent trauma to the ear or the ear drum is perforated!
