Treating Urinary Tract Infections using Ayurveda

From a western approach, urinary tract infections are generally treated using antibiotics. The Ayurvedic approach would take into consideration a variety of conditions, including the severity of the UTI, the constitution of the individual and their symptoms. If treated appropriately and proactively with Ayurvedic formulations and herbs ? under the guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner you can support your body in encouraging its natural healing.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, UTI’s are linked to an imbalance of all three doshas, in particular Pitta dosha. From a classical view UTI’s classify as a Srotogata Vikaras, disorder of the urinary system. When experiencing imbalance in the urinary channels, the body may have difficulty regulating the balance of fluids within the body. Fluid imbalance can impact the overall functioning of the body. Therefore those experiencing chronic urinary tract infections are suggested to speak with a practitioner to ensure the infection does not impact other bodily functions.

Panchakarma detoxification may be suggested to reinstate balance within the urinary system. Basti treatment is particularly effective and can help to eliminate accumulated toxins in the mutravaha srotas.

There are a number of classical Ayurvedic formulations suitable for treating urinary tract infections. It is important to note that these formulations are to only be taken under the guidance of your Ayurvedic practitioner. The particular combination of herbs will be unique for each client. Below are a few typical formulations.

    • Chandanasavam: the Sanskrit word ‘Chandana’ means sandalwood. As one of the ingredients in this formulation, the sandalwood combined with other Ayurvedic herbs also helps to cool burning sensations associated with UTIs. It has a small amount of alcohol through a natural fermentation process which helps to transport the herbs deeper into the bodily tissues.

    • Chandraprabha Vati. Chandra in Sanskrit means ‘moon’ ? This formulation, made of a large list of herbs, is known for helping to reduce symptoms related to cystitis in UTIs.

    • Bruhathyadi Kashayam is made up of five different herbs indicated to reduce inflammation, act as a diuretic and sooth the urinary tract system. The reference of this kashayam is found in the Ashtranga Hridayam.

  • Guduchi, Gokshuradi guggulu, Punarnava and Sariva are herbs ? and formulations that are also used, depending on the client, to treat urinary that infections.
