Castor Oil - What you need to know
Castor oil, known as Eranda, is an extract from the castor plant and has been used in Ayurveda since ancient times. It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-rheumatic properties. It functions as a purgative, anti-flatulent, and helps improve the digestive fire while clearing Ama (digestive function) from the body

Castor oil is often used as a Virechana Dravya, a drug to induce purgation during Panchakarma treatment. If you are a student interested in learning more about Panchakarma, we have a group student mentoring session on May 27th for $20 - the topic is Panchakarma

Castor oil helps to pacify both Vata and Pitta Doshas. If there are high levels of Kapha imbalance then castor oil may not be suitable for the individual. Various purgatives with Ruksha (drying), Tikshna (sharp) and Lekhana (scraping) properties may be more suitable for the individual.

Castor oil is not only great for internal use, it is fantastic for the skin. Its antibacterial properties can help treat fungal infections. It can also be used in treatment for the eyes

Castor oil packs are often suggested to help ease menstrual discomfort.

In short, remember that the unique qualities of herbs and substances have a different impact on each individual, depending on their unique constitution. Rarely is one herb or formulation suitable for everyone.

You’re welcome to book in with one of our practitioners to discuss various herbs and their suitability for you. Bookings are available via the link in our bio ✨
