    Ayurvedic Approach to Anxiety.
Yesterday we wrote about the use of the Ayurvedic formulation Manomitram in supporting mental health. Today we will expand upon this discussion, focusing on anxiety. Most of us know someone or have experienced directly the impacts of anxiety in our lives. Anxiety can cause major levels of distress in our relationships with others. Ayurveda offers a unique approach to anxiety; providing not only a response through medicinal avenues but also those focusing on body, mind and spirit.

We are all individuals, therefore treating anxiety will differ based on the unique set of circumstances for everyone. Generally, someone experiencing anxiety will be experiencing a Vata imbalance, which will express itself in the Mano vaha srotas, known as the channels of the mind. Vata dosa include qualities of dry, cold and light. To balance these qualities, introducing qualities of increased warmth, oiliness, and grounding will help to mitigate feelings of anxiety. These can be introduced through a number of lifestyle, dietary, herbal remedies, treatment and spiritual practices. Aligning with our natural state in order to make more wise and grounded decisions.

    Lifestyle Recommendations:

Following routine can create a sense of stability and grounding to combat feelings of overwhelm. This can include simple things like shutting off your phone at the same time each evening, or eating meals at similar times each day. This is not only beneficial for our mind, but also for our bodily processes as well. Spending time in nature, focusing on self-care, prioritising your daily routine and more are so beneficial for treating anxiety.

    Dietary Recommendations:

Incorporate more organic, seasonal and sattvic foods into your diet. Limit rajasic foods, such as chilli and caffeine which are known for their direct impact on our nervous system. Anxiety often results in lack of sleep and poor eating habits. As a result, our Agni (digestive fire) becomes compromised. Eating at consistent times throughout the day is one way of nurturing our Agni.

    Herbal Recommendations:

Herbs that target the nervous system include Ashwagandha, brahmi, Jatamansi, Tagara, forumations such as manomitram, Ashwagandha leyham, etc. are all great for relaxing the body and mind.

    Treatment Recommendations:

Rejuvenation treatment to deeply nourish the nerves, Shirodhara for mental rejuvenation, Abhyanga oil massage, nabhi purana, and more.

    Spiritual Recommendations:

Meditation, yoga therapy, chanting, music, philosophy. Depending on your religious or spiritual inclinations, this can include reading from your religious literature, spending time in prayer or reflecting on gratitude.
