Winter Solstice & Seasonal Routine

Do you follow a seasonal routine?

Called Rtucharya in Ayurveda, Ayurveda recommends following a seasonal routine. Classical references describe six ritus, or seasons. The year is divided into two kaalas, based on the northern and southern solstice. It is amazing the depth of seasonal understanding from thousands of years ago! The six ritus are as follows:
Hemantha and Shishira Ritu are early and late winter. ❄️
Vasantha is 🌷 spring.
Grisham is ☀️ summer.
Varsa is the 🌧 rainy season.
Sarat is 🍂 Autumn.

Ayurveda also describers Ritusandhi, which is the time between seasons.

In Ayurveda, the winter solstice—the time when the sun reaches its southernmost point, resulting in the shortest day and longest night—is a significant seasonal transition known as part of Hemanta Ritu (late autumn/early winter) and transitioning into Shishira Ritu (late winter), depending on the region and calendar used.

Ayurvedic Understanding of Winter Solstice
Sun’s Dakshinayana to Uttarayana Transition:
The winter solstice marks the end of Dakshinayana (the southern solstice) and the beginning of Uttarayana (northern solstice)—the period when the sun starts moving northward.
According to classical Ayurvedic texts like Ashtanga Hridaya and Charaka Samhita, Uttarayana is a time when the sun gains strength and has a drying, upward-moving effect on nature and human physiology.

Last night was the winter solstice here in Perth 🇦🇺 The shortest day of the year. The longest night of the year 🌚 The beginning of the winter season.

As winter falls upon us, what Ayurvedic practices can we bring into our lives this season?

Winter naturally gives us an opportunity to slow down, to rest - perfect timing for reflective and meditative 📿 practices. Winter gives us the chance to practice reflection and gratitude for the blessings in our life and areas in which change is necessary.
