Our Top Picks for Flu Season

Our top picks for Flu Season ~ย Six Ayurvedic Formulations for the upcoming winter months ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

The cold, windy and damp nature of winter means that both Kapha and Vata Doshas are prone to imbalance. Here are 6 herbs/ formulations we recommend to boost immunity and keep healthy during winter.

1. Amalaki Rasayana

2. Ginger

3. Yastimadhu - Licorice

4. Trikatu

5. Tulsi - Holy Basil

6. Sitopladi Churna

~ Amalaki Rasayana ~

The superior of all rasayana (rejuvenation) formulations. This tonic jam is revered as an โ€œelixir of lifeโ€ and has been used for thousands of years to rejuvenate the whole system. Benefits include; anti-ageing, boosts & strengthens the immune system, special affinity for the lungs, increases body strength (Bala), increase recovery rate from illness & stress, purifies & develops the seven body tissues (dhatus), and increases Ojas (vital essence).

Directions: Take 1/2-1 tsp, 1-2 x daily, eaten off the spoon or mixed in warm water

~ Ginger ~

The ultimate kitchen medicine. Ginger helps to clear Ama (digestive toxins) from the plasma and blood, warms the digestive system, enkindles Agni (digestive fire), secretes digestive enzymes, clears colds and alleviates cough/ breathing difficulties. Both fresh ginger (ardraka) and dried ginger (sunthi) are used in Ayurvedic medicine. If you are suffering from a cough/ cold try adraka swarasa (freshly squeezed ginger juice).

Directions: Mix the juice with honey and take 2 tsp, 2-3 x daily. Great combinations are: cinnamon, lemongrass and ginger. Or ginger, lemon and honey.

~ Licorice - Yastimadhu ~

Yastimadhu means โ€œthe sweet stickโ€. The sweetness of licorice is 50 times greater than sucrose. Licorice is a great expectorant and anti inflammatory. It is used in asthma, bronchitis and dry coughs. It is a great remedy for sore throat and laryngitis, when the powder is mixed with honey and relieves hoarseness of the voice.

Directions: A small licorice stick can be chewed and the juice is swallowed. Or a warm licorice tea is also beneficial as a gargle to soothe the throat.

~ Trikatu churna ~

A three ingredient formula of Sunthi, Maricha, and Pippali (ginger, black pepper and long pepper). The energetics of these spices are pungent, heating, light and dry - making it perfect to help eliminate excess Kapha Dosha. Trikatu awakens digestion, eliminates Ama (toxins), alleviates cough & asthma, and benefits breathing by clearing any sticky mucus/ phlegm. It is also a great remedy for hay fever. This formula should be used in caution if you are suffering from high pitta or hyperacidity.

Directions: Best to have as a paste combined with honey. Only small quantity needed, approx 1/4 tsp.

~ Tulsi โ€“ Holy Basil ๐ŸŒฟ ~

Tulsi is considered as a sattvic and sacred plant. It imparts the quality of lightness and spiritual clarity. A wonderful herb to increase immunity and to lift the heaviness of fever, cough and colds. Tulsi clears Kapha and mucous from the lungs and upper respiratory tract. It has Jvarahara properties (alleviates fever) by inducing sweating and therefore bringing the temperature down. Other benefits of Tulsi are improving oneโ€™s stamina, immune boosting, anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory properties and lifts the spirit - aiding in depression.

Directions: Best enjoyed as a cup of tea ๐Ÿ˜Œ

~ Sitopladi Churna ~

One of the most popular formulations for respiratory conditions, and is suitable for both adults and children. The formula consists of: pippali, cinnamon, bamboo silica, mishri (rock sugar) and cardamom. As an expectorant, sitopaladi is great for breaking through and eliminating mucus while also strengthens the respiratory system. Beneficial in asthma and cough due to its bronchodilator qualities. It is also a fantastic choice for soothing sore throat.

Directions: Mix 1/4-1/2 tsp with small tsp honey, 1-4 x daily.
