Sleep is crucial for our wellbeing, happiness, and for promoting knowledge and spiritual wisdom. It is one of the Traya Upastamba, the three pillars of life. These include ahara (diet), nidra (sleep), and Brahmacharya (code of conducts).
Ayurveda provides guidelines on when and when it is not appropriate to sleep during the day. Check out below for some indications.
Ask yourself these questions before day sleeping
YES ✅ you can take a nap
Feeling exhausted from physical activity.
Slept poorly throughout the night.
Before a meal.
Experiencing diarrhea or other physically tiring condition.
Pregnancy
If you are a child
Mentally exhausted
NO ❌ you should avoid naps
Did you recently eat a heavy meal? If so, NO!
Have you digested your last meal? If no, NO nap!
You are experiencing conditions of excess Kapha dosha - too much lethargy and stagnation.
Sleeping straight after eating is ALWAYS a no. This strongly reduces your bodys ability to digest your meal. As a result, digestive toxins will form and various diseases may arise.
