    Sweet and Holy Basil.

Most people are familiar cooking with Sweet Basil ?however many of our clients are intrigued when we speak about another variation of basil called Holy Basil, or Tulsi. Although both have incredible benefits for the body, you will generally hear Tulsi more often referred to in the Ayurvedic context.

Sweet basil is widely within our culture and is a staple in many dishes; pasta ? pizza ? pesto etc. Sweet basil is naturally sweet, bitter and pungent in taste and is best suited for Vata and Kapha doshas. It is useful in treating indigestion, cough ? asthma and is great for supporting stress relief.

Known as Tulsi, holy basil ? is known as one of the most scared herbs in Ayurveda. It is used for treating respiratory conditions, congestion, lethargy and poor circulation. People in Australia are less familiar with Holy Basil in comparison to its Sweet Basil family member, but awareness around Tulsi is growing. We have Tulsi available in various tea formulations as well as powdered and dry form.

Sweet Basil is more appropriate for cooking while Holy Basil is great for various tea mixtures. Beware that both can be heating in nature and when used in excess aggravate Pitta ?? Dosha.

Below is a simple recipe for a homemade pesto recipe. This is delicious as a topping for roasted vegetables or mixed in with whole wheat pasta.
