Do you have Millet on your Shopping List?
    We Love millets!

    Some facts about millet:
      • Millets are one of the earliest grains that are being cultivated and consumed by the people in India and the world

      • Millets - major and minor millets - Major millets include sorghum (jowar), pearl millet (bajra) and finger millet(ragi)

      • Minor millets includes foxtail millet, proso millet, kodomillet, barnyard millet and little millet

    • Pearl Millet and Sorghum are important food-grain crops in India after rice, wheat, and maize in terms of area and production

    Why Millets?

      • Highly nutritious (contains iron, calcium, potassium and phosphorus)

      • Less water consuming than other cereals

      • Grow faster and putting less stress on the environment

    • Low insects, pests and diseases problem

    Health Benefits of Millet

      • Beneficial in detoxifying the body

      • Helps in weight loss

      • Lowers bad cholesterol

      • Anti cancer

      • hypothyroid

      • Promotes bone health

      • Helps to prevent type 2 diabetes

      • Reduces blood pressure

      • Aids in treating respiratory conditions such as asthma

      • Helps to optimise kidney, liver and immune system

    • Eliminates digestive problems like constipation, excess gas, bloating and cramping

According to Ayurveda millet balances Kapha and Pitta Dosha and can increase Vata.

    The Ayurvedic properties are:

      • Rasa (Taste): Sweet (madhura), astringent

      • Virya (Action): Slightly heating (kinchith ushna)

      • Vipaka (Post-digestive effect): Sweet (madhura)

      • Gunas (Qualities): Dry, Light (ruksha and laghu)

    • Kleda shoshakam (dries up excess body moistness. This is a reason why Vata should eat it in moderation or add more ghee to it).

My favourite millet for breakfast is ragi (finger millet) porridge.
