Lifestyle disorder such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, high cholesterol, drug and alcohol related disease are one of the main causes of death worldwide.

A national health survey indicates that about 3 in 5 Australians (61.4%) are overweight or obeseand an estimated 1 million Australian adults (5%) had type 2 diabetes in 2014–15, according to self-reported data from the ABS 2014–15 National Health Survey.

Ayurveda the ancient Indian system of medicine has an incredible potential in the prevention and management/ treatment of lifestyle disease. Ayurveda is not only a system of medicine it is also a way of life that teaches us how to maintain  equilibrium of emotional, physical and spiritual health.

An important teaching of Ayurveda is the concept of Swasthavritta.
Svasthavritta is the knowledge how to follow a daily routine (Dinacharya), a night routine (Ratricharya), rules of conduct (Sadvritta), yoga practice and a seasonal regime (Rtucharya). This are all concepts helping the in the prevention of lifestyle disease such as avarnajanya Madhumeha (Diabetes/ NIDDM).

The seasonal regime also lays an importance of body cleansing procedures such as Panchakarma. Panchakarma(fivefold therapeutic methods of Ayurveda) has an immense potential in preventing and treating lifestyle disorders. Panchakarmais a Sanskrit term that translates as the five (pancha) actions (karma) necessary to cleanse the body of accumulated waste material. The Panchakarma treatments are Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Raktamokshana and Nasya.Through this series of therapeutic procedures that are tailored to the individual, it  helps  to release, melt, loosen , mobilise and eliminate toxins and impurities from all the bodily tissues. This has been proven to be an incredible benefit in preventing and in the treatment of lifestyle disease worldwide.

Panchakarma therapy is a well known procedure for its excellency to cure disease from the root cause. It has a wide range of applicability especially in disease with bahudoshavastha like Madhumeha (diabetes mellitus). Vamana karma (emesis) and virechana karma (purgation) are best indicated in sthula Madhumehi (NIDDM) . The proper application of shodhana karma (Purification therapy) involves different steps ranging from Poorvakarma to Pachatkarma. Vagbhata has mentioned the importance of Rookshana karma (drying therapy) before shodhana/ elimination procedures. Rookshana helps in correcting vitiated Kapha and meda the prime doshas involved in the manifestation of Diabetes Mellitus.
