The Gayatri Mantra is found in the Rig Veda. It focuses on the spiritual light, chanted specifically to illuminate the mind and the intellect. For true spiritual power, acquisition of the supreme spiritual light and attainment of enlightenment, there is nothing comparable to the Gayatri mantra. Practiced by Hindus and Buddhists of different tendencies, it is recognized as the supreme source for attaining enlightenment.
But what exactly are mantras and how do they work?
There’s a background sound-pattern to our consciousness. It may be a song we have just heard or the memory of a painful or pleasurable event. Some movement of sound is always going on inside us. Like the rhythm in music, it determines the rhythm of our consciousness. The conscious use of sound can change that rhythm so that the sound of our consciousness supports rather than detracts from our consciousness.
Mantra means ‘the instrument of mind’ or ‘what protects the mind’. It’s the main method of treating consciousness (Chitta) and is helpful for healing all levels of the mind, inner and outer. It can alter or eradicate deep-seated latencies and impressions.
Mantra allows us to change the vibratory pattern of consciousness. It changes the energetic structure of the mind which dissolves the problem, while thinking about the problem can reinforce it.
Meditation in the true sense, giving our attention fully to the object of our attention, requires that we already have a calm mind and controlled attention. Mantra is the way to prepare the mental field for meditation. It removes the Rajas (movement) and Tamas (inertia) in the mind, so that meditation, which requires Sattva (clarity) to proceed properly, can occur.
If, as most of us, you fail at meditation, try and prepare your mental field before the practice – The Gayatri mantra is perfect for it. It is believed that by chanting the Gayatri mantra and firmly establishing it in the mind, if you carry on your life and do the work that is ordained for you, your life will be full of happiness.
Gayatri Mantra Aum Bhuh Bhuvah Svah Tat Savitur Varenyam Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi Dhiyo Yo nah Prachodayat (The Rig Veda (10:16:3))
Meaning: "O Divine mother, our hearts are filled with darkness. Please make this darkness distant from us and promote illumination within us."
Isn’t it beautiful? It surely is an amazing way to start your day! So why don’t you implement the Gayatri mantra to your Dinacharya (daily practices)?
