    June 24, 2017 2 min read

I just received a phone call from a lady who has undergone her Panchakarma treatment (May/June 2017).

She had treatment for endometriosis, large ovarian cysts and fibroids. The cyst were quiet large and rapid growing in size that her Obstetrician recommend surgery to her.

She did not want to undergo surgery and choose the path of Ayurvedic Medicine.

Endometriosis is an ailment where the cells that are normally found lining the uterus are also found in other areas of the body but usually within the pelvis. Endometrial tissue can also be found in the ovary where it can form cysts.

Often women with endometriosis often complaint of painful menstruation.

The stage of menstrual flow is dominated by the vata dosha. Hence during the stage there is aggravation of vata dosha resulting in increased pain.

With the progression of the of endometriosis adhesion my develop. When present on the ovary, cysts may enlarge to several cm in size (as it did with the lady who has undergone PK treatment). This stage is dominated by Vata along with Kapha dosha.

Disorders of the female reproductive system are explained in the classics under the entity of Yoni vyapad and arthava vyapad.

Endometriosis can be correlated to Vatala Yonivyapad. Charaka mentioned the cause and symptoms in the Charaka Samhita Chi 30/22 (classical ayurvedic textbook).

Nidana (causative factors) is said to be four:

      1. Unwholesome diet and lifestyle are mentioned as causative factor

      1. Pradustartava (can be linked to hormonal imbalance, IVF treatments, contraceptive pills ..)

      1. bija dosha (abnormality of sperm and ovum/ genetic factors)

      1. Daiva (Idiopathic factors/ unknown causes)

    Principles of ayurvedic treatment

To treat a disease is by understanding the dosha, dushya and nidana

The doshas involved are Vata pradhana (mainly vata) with kapha anubandha (kapha associated). So the treatment should focus on vata shamana (pacifying the vata dosha) and lekhana to reduce the Kapha dosha and aim for srotosodhana (clearing obstructions e.g. cysts).

Our lady who was undergoing treatment had

      1. Deepana/Pachana (improving the digestive fire and digesting Ama/ digestive toxins)

      1. Snehapana (internal oleation)

      1. cassical Virechana (purgation)

      1. Basti treatment

      1. along this ayurvedic medicines where prescribed.

First pelvic ultrasound examination was done on the 26th of April showing cysts from 2.5 cm to 6.8 cm.

After classical Virechana treatment another scan was done on the 23 of May 2017 showing cyts in the size of 1.5am to 2.6 cm already significantly reduced.

Then Yoga basti treatment was performed at the clinic and another scan was done on the 21st of June.

Showing that there are no evidence of the previous 5 cm endometrioma/ haemorrhagic cyst.

This is just wonderful. Also very important to say this lady is just inspirational with her positive outlook trust and believe in Ayurveda.
