Rheumatoid Arthritis from an Ayurvedic Perspective

In Ayurveda rheumatoid arthritis is known as amavata and was described in great detail by Madhava (Ayurvedic classical text).

Amavata is named after the two involving pathological factors – Ama and Vata and is the condition where stiffness of the body occurs due to lodgement of Ama and Vata in the joints.

When Ama combines with the Vayu it then gives rise to:

- vibandha/ constipation

- mandagni/ impaired digestion

- stambha/ stiffness

- antra kujana/ gurgling sound

- vedana/ pain

- shopha/ oedema and a pin prick sensation which gradually affects the body parts one after the other.

Yesterday talked about a treatment called Podikizhi performed in the Ayurvedic treatment protocol. Other recommended treatments for rheumatoid arthritis are virechana (purgation), a suitable diet and herbal medicines to reduce AMA are essential.

Soon we have a patient arriving from Germany undergoing Panchakarma for her rheumatoid.

We are preparing Vaishvanara churna especially for her!!

This Ayurvedic herbal formulation is very useful in the treatment of low Agni (digestive fire), bloating, spastic colon, constipation, rheumatoid arthritis and it is promoting the downward flow of Vata (Vatanulomana).

The ingredients are:

1. Saindhava
2. Ajwain
3. Ajamonda
4. Sunthi
5. Haritaki

The formulations is best taken with hot water (ushna Jala) or Takra (buttermilk), for people with sensitive stomach it can also be taken along with ghee.

In Ayurvedic literature this formulation is given in the treatment for:

- Amavata – rheumatoid arthritis
- Gulma – abdominal tumour/ swelling
- Hridroga– heart disease
- Pleeha– spleen disorders
- Vata Roga – disease of Vata origin
- Deepana – appetiser
- Pachana – digestive
- Vatanulomana – promotes the downward flow of Vata

If you are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, digestive complaints or feel you could benefit from this formulation please email us on info@lakshmiayurveda.com.au

We wish you a great week!
