What is marma therapy?
A Marma vital point is a vital energy point located on the surface of the body.
The Ayurvedic text describes 107 Marma points located on a human body. These points are vital as the are infused with prana, the life force and imbued with consciousness. Those Marma points serve as a bridge between the body, mind and soul. Marma points are located at anatomical sites where veins, arteries, tendons, bones or joints intersect.
Feeling stressed, anxious or frustrated? Marma stimulation has been used for thousands of years to treat physical and emotional distress 🙏🏼
Out of 107 Marma points, 37 are located in the head and neck region This is what makes a head, neck and facial massage and and shirodhara treatment so beneficial amd therapeutic.
Below are a few of our favourite marma points of the face as mentioned by Sushruta Samhita.
1. Shankha Marma
Location: At the temple, slightly posterior to the eye brows. Left Shankha – relates to duodenum and descending colon. Right Shankha – relates to stomach and ascending colon.
Stimulation: Gently massage your Shankha Marma with Brahmi, Jatamamsi or Sandalwood oil (avoid heavy pressure).
Indications:
2. Avarta Marma
Location: right above each eyebrow, in the middle of each eyebrow.
Stimulation: this point is very sensitive! Best to only perform under the direction of your practitioner. You can gently stimulate this marma during a facial massage.
Indications:
3. Sthapani Marma
Location: In the midline of the forehead, one angula above the nasa mula.
Stimulation: Ajna Marma is naturally stimulated when the forehead touches the ground in the Yogasana (posture) known as the child’s pose.
Indications:
