A post for Ayurvedic students and classical Ayurveda Lovers.
We posted about the many wonderful benefits of Bilva fruit. Besides the fruits and the leaves the Bilva roots are also used for its medicinal benefits.
Bilva root is one of the ingredients in a famous classical ayurvedic herbal formulation called Dashamoola (the ten roots). Dasha (ten) moola (root).
This is made up of two sets of roots:
1.Brhat Pancha Mula: The five big roots as these are big trees and their roots are big. The (five big roots) Brhat Panchamula are Bilva, Agnimantha, Shyonaka, Patala, Gambhari
2.Laghu Pancha Mula: The five smaller roots as these are small plants. The Laghu Panchamula (five small roots) are
Shalaparni, Prshniparni, Brhati, Kantakari and Gokshura
Together they are known as Dashamula.
Combined together the properties and uses of Dashamula are:
•Tridoshahara, balancing for the three dosha
•Used in Shwasa (difficulty in breathing), Jwara (fever), Kasa (cough), Tandra (fatigue), Shotha (oedema), anaha (bloating), Parshwa shula (pain in flank region), Aruchi (loss of taste), Adhmana (distension of the abdomen), and it is the choice in all Vata vyadhi.
