How is your tongue looking? 👅
Are you using a tongue cleaner daily?
If not yet, this is a simple and beautiful part of Dinacharya — the daily Ayurvedic routine — to introduce into your life. ☺️
Scraping the tongue is called Jihva Nirlekhana. Ayurveda recommends gently scraping the tongue (jihva), rather than brushing it. ✔️
Brushing can stimulate the taste buds, but it doesn’t effectively remove the coating from the tongue. Scraping properly is a little like combing your hair — it should be done gently. If you scrape too hard, you may cause irritation or bleeding; too softly, and it may not be effective.
A good tongue cleaner should glide smoothly over the tongue without feeling scratchy. 🤩
Ayurveda traditionally recommends silver or copper tongue scrapers. Silver is considered cooling and supportive for Pitta, while copper is traditionally used for its cleansing properties and to help address Kapha-type congestion.
A few simple tips:
1. Use a tongue scraper rather than a toothbrush to clean the tongue and taste buds. ✔️
2. Choose silver, copper or stainless steel rather than plastic. ✔️
3. Use daily, preferably in the morning before breakfast. ✔️
4. Be gentle — scrape from the back of the tongue towards the tip, without pressing too hard. ✔️
