Why You Should Avoid Drinking Cold Water
If you have seen an Ayurvedic Practitioner before, you’ve most likely been told not to drink cold water. Room temperature, warm or hot is preferred. We are often asked, why?

Before we reach for the ice water, iced coffee, cold water, blended juices, etc., we need to realise how cold water impacts our bodies. The most obvious result of drinking cold beverages is on our agni, the digestive fire, as it decreases our digestive function. When the digestive fire is not working properly, the body more easily stores Ama, which are toxins that accumulate from undigested food.

Changing the temperature of my drinking water was one of the first alterations to my lifestyle when I first learned about Ayurveda. I was amazed at its impact, particularly on my digestive system.

It is winter here in Australia and we recommend sipping warm or hot water and herbal teas throughout the day. This will help encourage the body to maintain its body temperature and keep the digestive function and metabolism strong.

People with a Pitta constitution (Prakruti) or imbalance (Vikruti) are often more prone to craving cold beverages and food. In reality, the body is craving shita (cooling) qualities to combat its excessive heat particularly in the summer months. If you find yourself craving cold drink, try consuming beverages with cooling qualities such as room temperature coconut water, aloe vera juice, even a green juice without ice. All of these can help quench the heat. If you’re feeling extreme cravings for cold substances, make sure you are not eating spicy foods, drinking excessive caffeine and spending too much time in the sun.

In combination with the recommendations above, we would suggest speaking with an Ayurvedic Practitioner about different herbs and lifestyle alterations that would help promote further balance.
