    Barley (Yava) in Ayurveda
Do you use Barley (Hordeum vulgare) in your diet?
Barley is grown in Western Australia (support the local Barley industry).

Barley is called Yava in Ayurveda

If you suffer from Diabetes or excess weight then barley might be very beneficial for you.

Ayurveda has mentioned that it is a strength promoting grain that alleviates vitiated kapha dosha.

Barley is great for balancing weight.
It is light to digest and ruksha (drying) which makes is great in ailments where we see excess kleda (moisture).

Excess kleda (moisture) is seen in diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol and most kapha disease.
According to Ayurveda we see loose dhatus (bodily tissue) in Diabetes.
This is called “dhatu shaitilya” and barley has the quality to stabilise the dhatus (bodily tissues).

According to Charaka CS. Su 27/19, Yava (barley) is:

    Ruksha - dry
    Sheeta - cold
Aguru - not heavy to digest
    Svadu- sweet
    Sakashaya- slightly astringent
    Balya- strength promoting
Bahuvata shakrut - produces stool (laxative)

Due to its ruksha (dry) and laghu (light) guna (qualities) Yava increases Vata but the same time it clears the srotas (channels) and increases bala (strength).

If you are feeling heavy and congested try this bowel cleansing Barley drink:

Boil 200 ml of water and pour it in a thermos
    Add 3 tsp of barley
    1/2 tsp of fennel seeds
    1/2 tsp of cumin seeds
    1 tsp of coriander seeds
    5 black raisins

In the morning filter the mixture add a pinch of ginger and turmeric powder before drinking.
Wait 30-60 minutes before having breakfast.

For breakfast you could try a barley porridge, this can be made with rolled barley flakes or you can dry roast barley grains and grind it in a fine flour.
The flour is made into a watery gruel. This is called barley Sattu (traditional done in southern parts of India to treat indigestion).
