Pomegranates are called Dadima in Sanskrit or Anar in Hindi. The fruit, bark of the fruit and the roots are used in Ayurveda for medicinal purposes.
It is rich in levels of Vitamin C, Pectin, Sterols, Alkaloids, and Tannins. It is also known to improve haemoglobin levels and found useful in treating anaemia as the high Vitamin C encourages iron absorption.
From a spiritual point of view, Pomegranate was revered in many ancient cultures.
- It is said that Lord Ganesha loves pomegranates.
- In Jewish tradition pomegranates resembles fruitfulness, knowledge, learning and wisdom.
- Its abundance of seeds is a symbol of fertility in many ancient traditions.
- According to some beliefs pomegranate are grown in the gardens of paradise.
Rumi even mentioned pomegranate in multiple poems!
A few benefits and uses of Pomegranate:
1. Alkaloid in nature. If you suffer from acidity, 50 ml of pure pomegranate juice 1 to 2 x daily on an empty stomach can assist in mitigating symptoms.
2. Pomegranate helps to control diarrhoea (also good for children).
3. Great digestive aid and increases digestive function (Deepana).
4. Pomegranate helps to strengthen the heart Research has been conducted on this!
5. Assists in maintaining healthy levels of Oestrogen. Best to eat the fresh fruit, juice or seeds during menopause.
6. The fruit also kills parasites, it is specific for tapeworms, pinworms and roundworms. Best to follow this with a colon cleanse to flush out the parasites, as directed by a practitioner.
7. Roasted pomegranate seeds are beneficial for people with excessive appetite (tiksnagni).
8. Pomegranates are also a well known aphrodisiac, they benefit the semen (Shukrala) via the plasma.
9. In nose bleed the juice of its flowers is instilled nasally(nasya) to arrest the bleeding.
10. The juice can be applied on skin rashes, allergic rashes and insect bites. You can also mix it with aloe Vera gel in a 1:1 ratio.
11. The rind of the fruit can be used to prepare a toothpowder due to its astringent nature.
The Ayurvedic properties of Dadima include:
- Rasa (taste): sweet, astringent and sour.
- Vipaka (post-digestive taste): sweet.
- Virya (potency): semi hot in potency and it has an effect to balance the Tridosha.
