  • A lady suffering of Adenomyosis

    June 01, 2018 2 min read 26 Comments

A 40-year-old, mother of 2 was diagnosed with Adenomyosis in 2016.

A transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound revealed a bulky anteverted uterus. The myometrium showed adenomyosis and the endometrium measured 10 mm.

Adenomyosis is an ailment where the cells normally lining the uterus grow in the muscular tissue of the uterus. It can cause enlargement of the uterus and often presents as a bulky appearance on an Ultrasound.

It is usually seen in women in their reproductive years when oestrogen is needed in the body and often subsides after menopause. It is a non-malignant growth.

Adenomyosis can be a very debilitating and symptoms can vary from mild to severe.

    Our patient experienced these symptoms:
    1. Severe menstrual pain and cramps starting 7 days prior to her period
    2. Heavy bleeding
    3. Fainting due to pain
    4. Vomiting
    5. Severe Anaemia. She needed an intravenous iron infusion but had an allergic reaction resulting in a hospital admission
    6. Unable to go to work and bed bound for nearly 2 weeks at a time

Her obstetrician recommended a Hysterectomy and she booked a date to undergo this procedure.

Our patient conducted her own research and came across positive results from Adenomyosis Ayurvedic treatment, which brought her to Lakshmi Ayurveda.

A tailored treatment programme was recommended during her initial consultation and she decided to postpone the Hysterectomy surgery while undergoing the Ayurvedic treatments for Adenomyosis.

Granthi chikitsa was adopted when establishing the treatment plan. Granthi is a Sanskrit word meaning cyst, swelling, benign growth and we can correlate Adenomyosis to Granthi mentioned in the classical text. Another disease mentioned in the classics is called Arbuda. Arbuda is a disease characterised by a growth of a mass.

Granthi refers to modular or glandular swelling with hard, knotty and rough appearance. C.Chi 12:83

Granthi (cyst, swelling, benign growth) Treatment:
    1. Increase the digestive function Deepana/Pachana,
    2. Reduce the muscle, blood and fatty tissue this is called Mamsa, rakta and medohara chikitsa
    3. The ailment is tridoshic with Vata/Kapha predominance this is why Vata Kapha Hara chikitsa (pacifying treatment for Vata and Kapha is adopted).
    4. For reducing Kapha, lekhana treatment is done. Lekhana is a treatment with a scraping effect.

Our patient underwent a 4-week classical Panchakarma programme and the scan was repeated a few months after completing her programme. During this time, she adhered to strict Pathya/Apathy Ahara/Vihara (following a suitable diet and lifestyle) along with her prescribed Ayurvedic medicines.

    Symptoms after Panchakarma:
    • Period pain for 2 days instead of 7 days, severity decreased
    • Menstrual flow normal, heavy bleeding stopped improving her iron levels
    • Increased energy and vitality
    • Ability to return to work
    • No vomiting or fainting

A repeat scan was done and the thickness and bulging of the myometrium has decreased. Scans are available for scientific evidence.

    Hi/Namaskaram

hope you lovly ladies are doing well.
    I m Deeba ,I live in Dubai.

I have been recently diagnosed with adenomyosis this condition is there from last 7 months it has an inclining pattern means each month it is getting worse. Before that I was healthy.I m having extremely painful periods.I have gained weight also.my ideal weight should be 65kgs but I m at 75kgs right now.I consulted allopathic medicine n doctors which suggested me hormones tablets and painkillers.I m currently taking hormones tablets once a day.Recently come across that there is a way out in Ayurveda medicine and lifestyle changes.I m doing a 60 mins walk every day now.I have cut down on red meat and fat totally.I m doing yoga 3 days a week for 50 mins.

I had very stressful last 11 months of my life.I think it had effected me.

What do you suggest is there a treatment possible?

    Looking forward for your reply.

    Thank you/dhanyawad
