Endometriosis is an ailment where the cells that are normally found lining the uterus are also found in other areas of the body but usually within the pelvis. Endometrial tissue can also be found in the ovary where it can form cysts.
Often women with endometriosis often complaint of painful menstruation.
The stage of menstrual flow is dominated by the vata dosha. Hence during the stage there is aggravation of vata dosha resulting in increased pain.
With the progression of the of endometriosis adhesion my develop. When present on the ovary, cysts may enlarge to several cm in size. This stage is dominated by Vata along with Kapha dosha.
Endometriosis can be correlated to Vatala Yonivyapad. Charaka mentioned the cause and symptoms in the Charaka Samhita Chi 30/22 (classical ayurvedic textbook).
Nidana (causative factors) is said to be four:
- Unwholesome diet and lifestyle are mentioned as causative factor
- Pradustartava (can be linked to hormonal imbalance, IVF treatments, contraceptive pills ..)
- bija dosha (abnormality of sperm and ovum/ genetic factors)
- Daiva (Idiopathic factors/ unknown causes)

Granthi chikitsa is generally adopted when establishing a treatment plan for Adenomyosis. Granthi is a Sanskrit word meaning cyst, swelling, benign growth and we can correlate Adenomyosis to Granthi mentioned in the classical text. Another disease mentioned in the classics is called Arbuda. Arbuda is a disease characterised by a growth of a mass.
Granthi refers to modular or glandular swelling with hard, knotty and rough appearance. C.Chi 12:83
Granthi (cyst, swelling, benign growth) Treatment:
1. Increase the digestive function Deepana/Pachana,
2. Reduce the muscle, blood and fatty tissue this is called Mamsa, rakta and medohara chikitsa
3. The ailment is tridoshic with Vata/Kapha predominance this is why Vata Kapha Hara chikitsa (pacifying treatment for Vata and Kapha is adopted).
4. For reducing Kapha, lekhana treatment is done. Lekhana is a treatment with a scraping effect.

Primary Amenorrhea– is the failure to menstruate at puberty. In Ayurveda this is called prathamika anartava and is mainly attributed to sahaja vikriti (congenital defects) or mandya of the piyusa granthi and graivika granthi (hypo-pituitarism and hypothyroidism).
Secondary Amenorrhea– is much more common and is the absence of menses for six months. Problems may arise due to a disorder occurring in the uterine endometrium, the ovaries, the anterior pituitary or the hypothalamus. Amenorrhea can also be a physiological condition for instance during pregnancy, lactation and menopause.
Hetu (causative factor) for secondary amenorrhea
Ahara/ Vihara (Food and lifestyle)
• As with most diseases mithya ahara vihaara is an important hetu.
• Ahara sampat abhava (malnutrition)
• Asatmyanna / nutritional amenorrhoea
• Vyayama / excessive exercise
• Anashana / nutritional amenorrhoea (chronic)
• Atimaithuna / repeated intercourse
Manasika (mental/ emotional)

I highly recommend Karin for pre & post-natal care/treatments. This is something I have found most beneficial for fertility, preparation for a healthy pregnancy and baby. As a bonus, it certainly helped me move the extra weight that I found harder to shift once the baby was born!
My gynaecologist recommended I undergo laparoscopic surgery and immediately start hormonal treatments to cure my assumed endometriosis. I opted out of the surgery and hormones and decided I wanted to take an Ayurvedic approach to regaining my health through Panchakarma treatments with Karin. The decision was one of the best of my life.
My headaches at night disappeared, I got my periods back within 3 weeks (and it was a nice normal menstruation with no PMS!), my mouth ulcers healed quickly and I feel as though I have more energy. The coating on my tongue is slowly receding (so fascinating to watch!)…
I had a Yoga Basti (part of the Panchakarma) 9 day cleanse & other treatments, for a few things; allergies, food intolerances, bowel disease (crohns) & healing for my Uterus (after 3 miscarriages).
All I can say is WOW! I am feeling so much better already & im on my way to health & vitality once again. My bowel & uterus have responded instantly to the treatments, I no longer have terrible pain (in either area) – things are coming back to normal.
