If the factors mentioned below are taken into consideration, these will prevent the formation of AMA, digestive toxins, in the body.

  1. Prakriti – nature of the food. Look at the qualities of the food, is it heavy, light, heating, cooling etc. And do these qualities agree with your bodily needs? For instance, someone with a Pitta imbalance 🔥 would not want to consume too many food with natural qualities of heating tendencies.
  2. Karan – method of cooking, storing and preserving the food 🍳For instance, the importance of soaking legumes before consumption.
  3. Samyoga – combination. Check out our article from a few weeks ago regarding improper food combinations.
  4. Rasi – quantity 👐🏼 Even the most healthy foods can be poison if not consumed in the correct amount based on an individuals health and digestive capacy.
  5. Desa – place. Foods originating from you natural habitat tend to be best for you 🌿
  6. Kala – time. Eating meals at similar times throughout the day ⏰
  7. Upayogasanstha – how to consume food. For example, refraining from consuming food before your previous meal has been digested.
  8. Upayokta – action of the food depends on the physical and psychological state of an individual. For example, drinking coffee ☕️ when already feeling stressed. Eating according to your Prakriti and your vikruti.

The classical reference for this can be found in the Charaka Samhita, Vimanasthana 1:21-22.

If you consider yourself healthy but are experiencing digestive complaints, which of the factors mentioned above could be the cause of your discomfort? 🤔

Ayurvedic wisdom and teaching guides us on the journey of understanding ourselves and those around us from a deeper perspective.

Ayurveda teaches that each of us is made up of a unique blend of the Doshas. As we have discussed the doshas the past few weeks of Vata, Pitta and Kapha, which doshas do you seem most prominent within yourself?

Prakriti is our individual constitution acquired at birth and remains constant through life. Our prakroti does not change.

Your unique body type this is determined at the time of conception by the genetics, diet, lifestyle, and emotions of the parents at the time of conception. In addition, the diet and lifestyle of the mother during the pregnancy, the time, season and family hereditary characteristics also play a role.

There are 7 basic types of constitution. These are made up of single dosha, dual dosha and tri dosha. Remember – Not every person has the same ration of the doshas and this is why we are all unique!

1. Vataja.
2. Pittaja.
3. Kaphaja.

4. Vata- pitta.
5. Vata – kapha.
6. Kapha- pitta.
7. Tridosha (Vata/Pitta/Kapha).

It is important to note that seeing an Ayurvedic practitioner is the best way to truly identify your Prakriti, as it is so easy to be identified with our imbalances. The practitioner will assess your constitution through traditional Ayurvedic examination, including pulse analysis.

If you are interested in learning more you are welcome to book in with one of our practitioners. Alternatively you can email us with any questions.

With love, the Lakshmi team.

Last week we spoke about the transformational Pitta dosha 🔥💧This week we will go into more detail about the sweet Kapha dosha.

Kapha is made up of the element of water 💧and earth 🏔 Jala and Prithvi.

A few of the qualities of Kapha include an unctuous nature, cold 🥶 heavy, slow 🐌 slimy, stable and sweet.

How can you see the Kapha dosha around you? Perhaps the grandeur of the mountains ⛰ the stability of the trees 🌲 the flowing of the river. The earth, the water.

Can you see Kapha dosha in your physical body? Kapha promotes stability and bulk, strength. Individuals predominately Kapha in nature have soft and delicate skin, a pleasant appearance and attractive face. A Kapha person has a good immunity and does not fall sick easily.

An individual with a Kapha prakriti (constitution) tends to tolerate the heat well but does not sweat easily. They may have a very melodious voice 🎶 They may have a low appetite and thirst – however, Kaphas usually love food 😍 A Pitta constitution may be constantly hungry and thirsty where a Kapha may not be hungry but wants to eat. This may lead to weight gain if out of moderation.

How does Kapha manifest in the mind? In balance, Kapha embodies qualities of compassion, patience, caring and kindness 🙏🏼These people often take time in making a decision. Its easy to love Kapha. Out of balance, the mind may be lazy and stagnant.

Spring is the Kapha season 🌸 If you experience excess weight gain, feelings of lethargy and heaviness, a seasonal cleanse may be suitable for you. The first step is to set up an initial consultation with one of our practitioners to discuss a detox program for you.

It is important to remember to love and accept our natural constitution – your body weight, shape and function is all dependent on your unique blend of the elements. Oh the beauty of Ayurveda ♥️

Bookings available via our website.

With love from the Lakshmi team, may the strength of Kapha surround you today.

You are perfect the way you are!
This is a follow up to my radio interview yesterday. After we had finished, Jenn from Radio Fremantle asked if people favour to be one of the three Doshas (Vata, Pitta or Kapha) 🌬🔥💧
And Yes this is something we see very often in clinic. Somebody says oh I thought I was the creative and enthusiastic type and not the fiery one. Or somebody says I thoughtI I was the type who is prone to weight gain and not the stressed out one 🙂
Be assured each one of us has qualities of all the three doshas. There is just a predominance in one or two of the doshas or we can be Tridoshic (an even balance of all three).
Vata, pitta, and kapha are each essential to our physiology in some way, so no one dosha is better than, or superior to, any other. Each of them has a very specific set of functional roles to play in the body. All dosha are wonderful when in balance. We would like to avoid an increase (vriddhi) or decrease (kshaya) as this will bring on a disease. The imbalance is called the Vikruti.
Beauty of the three doshas:
Vata type 🌬
Is full of enthusiasm, creativity, dance, music, movement and alertness.
Pitta type🔥
Is full of knowledge, intellectual, courage and bravery.
Kapha type💧
A beautiful friend full of compassion, love, stability and strength.
I wanted to highlight that there is no need to favour Vata, Pitta or Kapha 🌬🔥💧
You are perfect the way you are.
A little bit more about Prakriti:
Ones individual body constitution and mental temperament is known as Prakriti.
One’s Prakriti is acquired at birth and remains with the individual throughout his/her life.
A person’s doshas will fluctuate throughout their entire life (age, season, diet, digestion, lifestyle) however, the Prakriti remains unchanged.
Charaka quotes that the prakriti of the foetus is determined by the following factors Su. Sa. 4:63
1. Sperm and ovum – shukra and sonita
2. Season (rtu) and the condition of the uterus
3. Food and regimes of the mother
4. Nature of the mahabhutas (elements) comprising the foetus.
The above factors are all addressed in the Ayurvedic approach to pre conception care.
The seven Prakritis are
1. Vataja🌬
2. Pittaja🔥
3. Kaphaja💧
4. Vata Pittaja
5. Vata Kaphaja
6. Kapha Pittaja
7. Tridosaja.
The first three are single dosha (eka doshaja prakriti) these are more rare.
Most of us are the next three which are a combination of the two.
Why it is important to know your Prakriti?
You are able to learn which foods are suited for you.
You gain an understanding which illnesses your body is more prone to.
You are able to follow a lifestyle suited to you.
You can follow a seasonal regime suited to you.
You are able to notice any imbalance in the doshas and can learn how you can balance them again.
You will learn about any emotional tendencies.
Cultivating a relationship with each of the three doshas can have a transformative impact on your overall health and well-being. We would love to support you in beginning to befriend the doshas in your life. If you would like to find out about your unique Ayurvedic constitution, book your initial consultation.

Once the body is nourished by a healthy diet & lifestyle, general tonics and fertility enhancing herbs can be taken. These herbs can also help offset the effects of stress in today’s busy lifestyles. Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is a powerful fertility enhancing herb, whose name means ‘she who has a hundred husbands’. Ashwagandha (Withania sominfera) is a highly rejuvenating herb that both promotes semen production and strengthens the uterus. Its name refers to it giving one the strength of a horse, and it acts as a natural aphrodisiac.
