Hypercholesterolemia and Ayurveda

Karin Lakshmi Gunthor, BSc Hons Ayurveda

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a greasy substance that is part of circulating lipids in the body.

It is part of the cell membranes and is used for the synthesis of steroid hormones, bile salts, and vitamin D.

It is derived from the diet and it is synthesized within our body mainly in the liver. Cholesterol is an important building block in the formation and repair of cell walls, the function of nerve tissues, the production of hormones. It is important to understand that normal amount of cholesterol itself is not bad and is essential for the body.

What if we have too much of it?

Hypercholesterolemia involves abnormally elevated levels of any or all lipids and/ or lipoproteins in the blood. These lipids include cholesterol, cholesterol esters, phospholipids, and triglycerides.

Hypercholesterolemia is recognized as a risk factor for ischemic heart disease and coronary mortality.

Lipids can be correlated to sneha, medo dhatu, saama rasa due to similarity in their properties.

In Ayurveda, we do not have any disease which can be directly compared to Hypercholesterolemia but we know that this disease is characterized by an increased amount of lipids present in the bloodstream.

Most of the acharyas have considered hypercholesterolemia under the heading of medoroga or medodosha but some authors consider it as as rasagata-snehavriddhi, raktgata-snehavriddhi and some authors consider it under the broad umbrella of AMA.

Most of the acharyas have stressed upon the role of an imbalanced diet and sedentary habits as a causative factor of medoroga or santarpanajanyavyadhis

We can say it is a dushya dominant disorder mainly of the meda and rasa dhatu.

there are two types of medo dhatu. One is poshaka and second is poshya.  Among these two, poshaka is mobile in nature (gatiyukta) which is circulated in the whole.

Improper diet and lifestyle, as well as emotional factors, will lead to improper Agni resulting in Ama.

The pathology of Medodhatuagnimandya leads to excess homologous poshakamedo-dhatu in the circulation.

Kelsey was diagnosed with endometriosis and had been experiencing all the symptoms related to the condition. We tailored a Panchakarma program for her, she was committed and willing to do the necessary lifestyle and diet changes. After her program, all of her symptoms have dramatically reduced and she feels a new person.

Here is Kelsey’s testimonial:

“The Panchakarma treatments with Karin have changed my life. Prior to starting Panchakarma, I experienced significant digestion issues, menstrual pain, trouble sleeping, anaemia, fatigue and emotional blockages. My gynaecologist recommended I undergo laparoscopic surgery and immediately start hormonal treatments to cure my assumed endometriosis. I opted out of the surgery and hormones and decided I wanted to take an Ayurvedic approach to regaining my health through Panchakarma treatments with Karin. The decision was one of the best of my life.

Karin and her therapists were extremely supportive during the treatments. I loved being at the clinic and seeing them daily. Their emotional support was genuine and unmatched by any medical professional I have ever met. The symptoms I faced prior to Panchakarma have miraculously reduced. My friends tell me I look brighter (and I can actually see it in myself). My quality of life on a mental, spiritual and physical level have improved dramatically. Karin is inspiring, genuine, caring, and extremely knowledgeable in her understanding of Ayurveda. Lakshmi Ayurveda has been an absolute blessing to my life. I recommend visiting the clinic to everyone.

With all my Light and Love I thank you,

Kelsey”

We just said goodbye to a lovely in-patient. It’s amazing that we can have our patients staying at Lakshmi Ayurveda for their program. Even though it’s a bit sad when they go back home, it’s amazing when we hear back how amazing they feel and how their lives have positively changed after their Panchakarma program at Lakshmi Ayurveda.

Here’s Florence’s testimonial:

“I just had the most caring panchakarma of my life at Lakshmi. Karin was outstanding in the way she would explain all the outcomes possible to every small step of the treatment, making me secure and more interested through the process. My friends have been telling me how glowing I am, and they have no idea how good it feels inside. I feel centred, having the body and mind functioning in their best in years! I left Lakshimi promising myself to do it regularly. So I’ll be back for this encounter to my highest I. Love&Light to all therapist there. Florence”

The beauty of Saffron

The Indian Saffron is cultivated in Kashmir, and is also known by the name Kesar, Kumkuma, or the latin name crocus sativus-stigmata.

It is a small perennial growing to about 20cm with violet leaves and each flower producing 3 stamens.

When Saffron is flowering the fields are filled with the most amazing violet/red glow. This is truly breathtaking.

To produce 1 gm of dried saffron it will take approximately 160 flowers no wonder it is such a costly herb.

The Ayurvedic properties/ energetic are

Rasa (taste): Katu (Pungent) and tikta (bitter)

Guna (qualities): light and unctuous

Virya (energy): ushna (hot)

Kumkuma is also the main ingredient of the beautiful Kumkumadi thailam (also available at Lakshmi Ayurveda).

There are so many uses of Kumkum/ Saffron acting beneficial on the heart, nerves, mind, reproductive system, blood (Anaemia), pain reducing and immunity increasing.

Saffron is a very sattvic herb, its action on the blood and the heart encourages compassion and love.

At Lakshmi Ayurveda we offer authentic classic Panchakarma treatment, where you can also stay as an in-patient and enjoy our beautiful clinic facilities. We just had a lovely patient staying with us; she left us with this beautiful card that made all of us feel so loved, inspired and grateful….

Thank you so much for this beautiful, healing experience!

“Dearest Karin,

Thank you so much for this beautiful, healing experience! I am so grateful for everything over the past two weeks. You are an amazing healer, practitioner and teacher!

Real healing only happens when one can be open, feel vulnerable and surrender in the presence of the practitioner, and you definitely create that space – so thank you!

This has been such an incredible learning experience for me, about myself, about health physically, mentally and spiritually, and about Ayurveda! And thank you for the opportunity to stay here too, it made it that much more special for me! Stepping away from daily habits and into this sanctuary you have created here! I’m feeling so inspired now for life, my mind is so much more clear, my tummy doesn’t feel as heavy and I have consistent energy throughout the day. So thank you, and also a special thank to Aki, Talu and Irena for their support during the Panchakarma too! My mind is now filled with all the knowledge you have passed on to me, I feel so blessed to have stumbled upon Ayurveda and all the beauty it has to offer!

Much love, A.”

Testimonial for Panchakarma

As man in late middle age and suffering from the stresses of 21st century living, being overweight, foggy brained, listless and tired with the attendant problems of high blood pressure, high sugar and cholesterol levels, I knew I was in need of a remedy.

As seems to be the case when a need becomes pressing I was offered a possible solution for the alleviation of my ailments. I went for a walk with a friend who told me of this program and that he was seriously considering following it. This intrigued me and after a struggle with my ego who was trying to talk me out of it I made the commitment to undertake the program.

Although I was aware of ayurvedic medicine I had no idea of what its premise was or what it entailed, so I had no preconceived notions or expectations.

The process itself began with a consultation with Karin who was very caring and obviously fully committed to her work. I realised that far from being a simple detoxification program it was specifically tailored to my needs and offered the promise of relief from some chronic issues that were curtailing my life quality.

The first three days were difficult but not as difficult as I imagined and I realised that much of the discomfort was due to the sacrifice of my cherished habits which whilst enjoyable were not exactly healthy, especially the quantities in which they were indulged.

After that the process became more and more enjoyable under the nurturing hands of Karin, Talu and Aki. I especially enjoyed the hot turmeric oil massages and Shirodhara (the pouring of warm oil upon the forehead).

I felt a bit uncomfortable about the enema’s but my concern was unwarranted as the process was painless and not embarrassing.

I have just recently finished the program but can feel that my body is still at work and so I expect that the benefits of the process will continue.

As to the benefits: My blood pressure is significantly lower as are my cholesterol and sugar levels. My skin is clear, my eyes bright and for the first time in years I am not having to get up at night time to go to the bathroom. My lower back pain has disappeared and I am hopeful that my arthritic knee will also improve overtime.

In addition, my mind is clear my mood has improved, I am waking up fresh and I have lost the desire for sweet things.

As a bonus I lost 5kg in two weeks and it is very gratifying to look down and be able to see my feet.

Finally the Panchakarma program supports any psychological or spiritual process one is undertaking as it helps integrate mind and body which is vital for well being and so often overlooked in the fragmentary chaos of wester civilisation.

So if you are looking to improve your health and promote lifestyle change I heartily recommend taking the Panchakarma Program.

Thanks for taking the time to read this missive.
