Which products do you use for your menstruation? Pads, tampons, the cup period briefs and undies?
Wondering which products should you be using?
Looking at fundamental principles of Ayurveda, we know that Apana Vata is the subdosha of Vata that governs the downward flow of menstruation blood. Therefore it is imprtantant that we look after the health of Apana Vayu.
How can we look after our menstruation?
Refrain from using insertable items such as tampons and cups as they may disrupt the natural flow of Apana vata. The insertion of these products disrupts the downward flow that is necessary for a healthy menstrual cycle. Plus it is important to see the colour, texture of the blood as this provides insight into our health.
What should your menses look like?
In the Charaka Samhita, one of the classical texts of Ayurveda, it is mentioned that blood should not stain a cloth and be easy to wash, it should be free of clots, should not be sticky, should not cause pain or a burning sensation. Nutritional deficiency will often result in scanty periods or Amenorrhoea.
What colour should the blood be?
The classical texts say it should be the colour of a red lotus or rabbit blood. To make things simple, this is a medium red - too bright in colour may indicate a Pitta imbalance while too dark in colour may indicate a Vata or Kapha imbalance.
