How Should you Consume your Herbs?
Ayurveda speaks about the importance of how to take your Ayurvedic herbs and formulations. The effectiveness of the herbs is dependent upon proper consumption.

Have you wondered why your practitioner suggests you take your herbs with either honey, ghee, milk or through another process? You may be surprised to know there is a reason for this!

The digestibility and effective absorption of herbs are dependent upon the digestive capacity of an individual. This is assessed by your Ayurvedic practitioner during a consultation.

Anupan is the Ayurvedic concept of a carrier substance to take herbs deeper into the bodily tissues.

A few Different types of Anupans ??

    1. Honey ? Honey has a lekana effect, a scraping effect. Meaning it is great for clearing phlegm and mucous from the system. Great for Kapha.

    1. Ghee ✨ ghee has a semi-permeable membrane that helps to take the herbs deeper into the bodily tissues. This is great for individuals with more Pitta or Vata-like qualities.

    1. Milk ? Very nourishing and helps make the intake of herbs more palatable.

    1. Water ? It is said that freshly collected rainwater is the best Anupana among all. Hot water is mostly recommended after medicated ghee or oil and Vata and Kapha disorders. Cold water is recommended for Pitta and blood disorders and herbs such as Bhallataka which are very heating in nature.

    1. Fermentation: This is the best Anupana along food preparation containing black gram (Masha).

    1. Buttermilk: This is one of the best Anupana in ailments such as Oedema, low Agni, irritable bowel disease and loss of taste.

It is best to speak with a practitioner to understand which method of taking herbs is most suitable for you. Check out our post from a few days ago for more information.

Wishing you a great rest of your day!
