Ayurvedic ointment preparation in Lakshmi’s kitchen
Ayurveda teaches the therapeutic importance of herbal paste preparation (Lepana kalpana) and Malahara Kalpana (ointments). Ointments are used for external applications and originate from the Unani system of medicine.

They are easy to prepare and so benefical for many ailments.

The name Malahara highlights the ability to remove toxins, residue (mala) from wounds, abscess and other skin conditions.

    There are three main ingredients:

      • Thailam (black seed sesame or coconut oil), 5-6 parts

      • Binding material (bees wax or ghee), 1 part

      • Active ingredients (fine herbal powders)

Main actions for Malhara (Ayurvedic ointments)

      • Snehana/ oleating

      • Ropana / healing

      • Lekhana / scraping

      • Varnya/ complexion promoting

    Method of preparation

      • Melt the bees wax

      • And add seame oil or coconut oil. After it is melted, filter it through a cheesecloth.

      • Fine powders (sukshma churna) are added. Stir continuously until it becomes a homogenous mixture having one even colour.

Today we are preparing malahara/ ointment  for a patient suffering from dermatitis.

We will be using turmeric, aloe vera, neem, khadira, manjista and sariva to mention a few.

If you are suffering from a skin ailment and considering an Ayurvedic treatment approach we would love to hear from you.
