    Healthy Sperm

Over the next week we will post some articles on pre conception, pregnancy and post partum care according to Ayurveda.

Recently we posted about menstrual blood the normal state and the sings of an imbalance.

Today we look at Shukra also called sperm/semen.

An excerpt of the classical text book Astanga Hridaya, Sarirasthana.

“Healthy semen is mild, well lubricated, thick in nature, sweet, white in colour, smells like honey, is ample in quantity, resembles ghee, oil or honey.

This kind of semen is considered perfect for conception

Sings of imbalance in shukra/ semen.

    Imbalance due to Vata

Semen is frothy, scanty, very liquid in nature and ejaculation can be premature, delayed and painful.

    Imbalance due to Pitta

Semen is non viscous in nature, yellowish in colour, ejaculation is accompanied by a burning sensation.

    Imbalance due to Kapha

Semen is very thick and heavy in nature, there can be excess quantity.

Imbalance due to all three doshas

Semen is scanty and foul smelling, accompanied by pus and clots.

Ayurveda also talks about symptoms of decreased semen (Shukra kshaya lakshanas  A.H. Su 11:20)

    1. Ejaculation after a long time - Cirascha niskena

    2. Pain in penis and testis - Medra  vrasanavedana

    3. Semen mixed with blood - Sarakta shukra

    4. Feeling of heat in the urethra - Medrodhumayana

Poor quality of sperm could lead to the imbalances for the offspring or the child being weak.

Conception is difficult and the chances of miscarriage are higher.

Ayurveda beliefs that unhealthy semen causes problems to the man himself, to his child and to the women as well.

This makes it so vital to understand that the health of your baby depends on the health of both parents.

If there are deficiencies or imbalances it is best to correct them before trying for pregnancy.

The characteristic quality of sperm is mild and cooling (soumya). Sperm can only be produced by temperatures lower then regular body temperature. This is why Ayurveda advises that excessive heat in the genital area should be avoided for example

    1. Excess hot bath or frequent sauna

    2. Tight clothing

    3. Alcohol and smoking

    4. Hot and spicy food

    5. Avoid excess salt with the exception of some saindhava/ rock salt.

    6. Mental stress

    7. Staying awake at night

    Ayurveda recommends:

    1. Milk - contains all the ten gunas of ojas

    2. Ghee - increases Ojas, teja, bala and ayu/ life it self.

    3. Castor oil is said to be both vrshya and Sukrasodhana (fertility promoting and purifying for the sperm)

    4. Narikela/ coconut water has cooling, sweet and nourishing qualities.

    5. Rice -  especially a variety called raktasali is good for shukra

    6. Herbs such as ashwagandha, bala, jivanti and Musli.

    7. Fruits such as amalaki and grapes

    8. Soaked chickpeas are recommended

    9. Nutritious diet and exercise

    10. Meditation and yoga

“Charaka says that all dravyas that are madhura, snigdha, brmhana, jivana, guru and produce harsha in the mind are generally vrshya. “

In translation all substances which are sweet, oily, nourishing, life promoting, heavy and produce a blissful mind are considered as fertility increasing.

If you are planning a pregnancy we highly recommend to implement the offerings of Ayurveda.

We wish you a great Sunday
