    Lasuna Rasayana - Garlic
    Lasuna or Rasona is the Sanskrit word for Garlic.

    Garlic is widely used in Ayurvedic medicine but should be used with caution if a disease is predominant by Pitta dosha and Rakta dhatu.

    The Ayurvedic actions are:

      • Brmhana - nourishing.

      • Deepana - stimulates Agni.

      • Amanasaka - destroys Ama.

      • Vatarasayana - rejuvenation for Vata.

      • Shoolagna - alleviates pain.

      • Krimighna - anti parasitic.


    According to Vagbhata the author fo Asthanga Hridayam, Lasuna is the best treatment in all types of Avarana - Vata conditions.

    It is said that a drop of nectar which fell on the ground from the neck of Rahu (demon) who stole the nectar was transformed into rasona.

    AH. Utt. 39/111.

    Kashyapa the author of the Kashyapa Samhita mentioned two varieties of lasuna. One which grows in the mountains and one which grows in the plains.

    The Ayurvedic properties are:

      • Rasa (taste) -panchrasa (has 5 taste).

      • Guna (qualities) - snigdha (oily), guru (heavy), tikshna (quick), Sara (unstable)

      • Virya (potency) - Ushna (heating).

      • Vipaka (post digestive taste) - katu (pungent).

      • Karma (action) - Vata kapha hara, Rasayana.


    Many Acharyas using this potent herb in many formulations such as Lasunadi Vati or Lasunadi ksheera paka.

    If an increase of Pitta (Pitta Prakopa) occurs after Lasuna Rasayana then a mild virechana (purgation) is indicated.

    Contraindications for Garlic:

    1. Heartburn.

    2. Acidity.

    3. Gastric ulcers.

    4. Pitta disease.

    5. High blood pressure.

    6. Skin disease.

    7. Gallstones.
