Brussel Sprouts from an Ayurvedic Perspective.
Do you experience digestive discomfort and gas resulting from the consumption of brussel sprouts?

Did you know this can be avoided? Understanding and following Ayurvedic principles and guidelines can help mitigate the effects of gaseous vegetables and foods, such as Brussel sprouts.

The past few weeks we have been discussing the panchamahabhutas, having covered both Akash and Vayu, we understand that lightness and movement result from these elements. The Vayu element is particularly impacted with the gaseous qualities of Brussel sprouts, as it encourages food to move through the GI tract.

From an Ayurvedic perspective Brussel sprouts can be Vata aggravating, causing an excess of Akash and Vayu elements within the body as mentioned above. This can manifest as bloating, flatulence and digestive pain to name a few. Ayurveda provides simple remedies to enhance the digestibility of many foods.

So how can we create a balancing meal when cooking with Brussel sprouts? Firstly, incorporating ingredients with Vata pacifying qualities are beneficial ✅ This includes cooking with ghee, cumin, Himalayan salt and our homemade Vata churn are great to start. Secondly, it is important to make sure the sprouts are fully cooked before eating! We like to sprinkle some slightly roasted sesame seeds on the top for added flavour.

Although Brussel sprouts are wind producing, we also can add ingredients with an element of fire, Teja as discussed in the previous post, help to boost the digestive fire and encourage optimal digestion.

If you experience digestive discomforts Ayurveda has a number of remedies to easily incorporate into your daily life. Speaking with one of our Ayurvedic practitioners and assessing your diet is the best place to start - bookings are available online or by calling 0406 810 547 during office hours.

We hope you enjoy your Brussel sprouts as much as we do!
