Acute cervical disc protrusion – How Ayurveda can help you
Acute cervical disc prolapse is called Apabahuka in Ayurveda
I personally suffered from this and this can be something very painful especially when the protruded disc compresses a spinal nerve.
A MRI of the cervical spine is the most common diagnostic tool for this.
…
Western medicine is treating this with anti inflammatory medication and analgesia. Your Neruologist may consier a nerve sleeve root injection with steroid or if still no improvement surgery might be considered as the last resource.
I am always amazed to see what Ayurveda has to offer – it really is a very complete medical science.
Cervical disc prolapse is called Apabahuka in ayurveda and is described by Susruta Samhita (SS.Nid 1:82).
The Ayurvedic concept is that Vata vrddhi (increased vata) occurs in Kapha sthana (site of Kapha). The increased Vata causes obstructions then pressuring on the nerves of the shoulder region.
This is can cause servere pain in the neck and shoulder area (also radiating to the hand), motor weakness of the hands, parasthesia (numbness, tingling)
In the acute phase (first few days) ruksha sveda (sudation with dry husk or Kulattham powder) or lepana treatment (warm herbal paste is applied on the cervical spine) and then later snidgha sveda (oily sudation) such as Patra potali Pinda sveda is recommended.
The Ayurvedic treatment and management of the acute cervical disc prolapse differs depending on the causative factor for the increased Vata (avarana/ obstruction or dhatu kashaya/ degeneration).
Internal medicine such as Rasnasapthakam kashayam are very beneficial. It has heating (ushna) properties and calming for kapha and vata. Also guggulu preparation (anti inflammatory herbs) such as Aba guggulu are recommended (The medicines should only be taken after consulting your Ayurvedic practitioner).
Ayurvedic treatments such as pinda sveda, dhara, nasya treatment are recommended. Ayurvedic oils (thailams) which are used are Karpasasthyadi thailam, Prasarnaydi tailam and Prabhanjana thailam.
I can highly recommend using the science of Ayurveda in healing of disc prolapse/ Apabahuka.
